UBC-Laurier Institution Multiculturalism
Lecture 2008 - Tuesday, April 15, 2008, 7:00 PM, The Chan Centre
for the Performing Arts.
This event is open to the public and everyone is welcome. Tickets
are required. Please call 604-822-1444 to pre-register for your
FREE ticket or visit the Chan Centre Ticket office.
This year's lecture, The Three Lives of Multiculturalism,
will be delivered by guest speaker Dr. Will Kymlicka, Canada Research
Chair in Political Philosophy at Queen's University, and a visiting
professor in the Nationalism Studies program at the Central European
University in Budapest. Dr. Kymlicka will be introduced by UBC President,
Professor Stephen Toope.
The event will open with music by Delhi 2 Dublin, a five-member
ensemble of Canadian musicians who blend east and west, electronic
and acoustic, mainstream and underground. The band fuses the traditional
sounds of tabla, dhol, fiddle, and sitar with cutting edge DJ aesthetics,
to create a highly charged multi-cultural celebration. Please visit

Mandate
The Mandate of the Office of Community Affairs is to forge and
develop relationships with special communities as well as to further
expand UBC's presence and commitment in the urban environment by
creating and promoting programs that encourage participation in
UBC activities and academia.
The philosophy and practices of the unit are in direct relation
to TREK 2010 including the development and support of a high level
of critical mass of interesting and relevant programs for UBC Faculty,
Staff and Students and for the Community-at-large.
Mission
To act as a catalyst developing community programmes based on
the teaching and research activities of the University and partner
institutions
To show by example the kind of activities that lead to the creation
of a civil society and increased social engagement with the communities
we serve.
To act as an integrator and promoter of the myriad of excellent
community programs developed by the departments and faculties
HISTORY
Community Affairs grew out of Community Relations, a portfolio
handled by Chuck Slonecker who, while also serving as Director of
Ceremonies, engaged UBC in community activities. Ceremonies and
Community Affairs are now separate departments under ELA.
