Mandate
The Mandate of the Office of Community Affairs is to forge and
develop relationships with special communities as well as to further
expand UBC's presence and commitment in the urban environment by
creating and promoting programs that encourage participation in
UBC activities and academia.
The philosophy and practices of the unit are in direct relation
to TREK 2010 including the development and support of a high level
of critical mass of interesting and relevant programs for UBC Faculty,
Staff and Students and for the Community-at-large.
Mission
To act as a catalyst developing community programmes based on
the teaching and research activities of the University and partner
institutions
To show by example the kind of activities that lead to the creation
of a civil society and increased social engagement with the communities
we serve.
To act as an integrator and promoter of the myriad of excellent
community programs developed by the departments and faculties
HISTORY
Community Affairs grew out of Community Relations, a portfolio
handled by Chuck Slonecker who, while also serving as Director of
Ceremonies, engaged UBC in community activities. Ceremonies and
Community Affairs are now separate departments under ELA.
