Bridge Through Sport
Reading Club
September 2005 - April 2006
The Reading Club was offered to Musqueam youth aged 4-12. The Reading Club met every Monday
night in the Musqueam community. From 5-7pm, youth participated in fun reading focused activities,
followed by snacks, an hour of recreation, and door prizes. As part of the program, participants had access to a small library of books at the club, and also compelted a reading log to keep track of, and be celebrated for, their at-home reading.
UBC Varsity athletes and Aboriginal athletes join us as guest presenters to lead activities with the
youth, and serve as positive role models. Additional presenters include Musqueam artists, and
Aboriginal authors.
Reading Club Goals and Objectives
-
To generate sustained interest, excitement and a sense of value, among Musqueam youth, for reading, academics, and sport.
-
To create learning opportunities centered around Musqueam history and culture
-
To connect Musqueam youth with positive role models from their community, the UBC community and the broader Aboriginal community
-
To provide volunteer, and leadership opportunities for UBC students, while also providing opportunity for UBC students to learn more about Musqueam history and culture
- To connect Musqueam elementary-school-aged youth with University role models, in order to generate interest, at a young age, in the possibility of pursuing post-secondary education, so that such youth may enrol in high school classes that lead to post-secondary options rather than to a high school finishing certificate
