Dal Grauer Memorial Lecture

The Dal Grauer Memorial Lectures program was established by family and friends in memory the late A.E. Grauer, who was considered one of the most brilliant men of his generation. At his untimely death in 1961 he was President and Chairman of the Board of BC Power Corporation, the BC Electric Company and was serving his second term as Chancellor of the University of British Columbia.

A Rhodes Scholar, he graduated from UBC at 19 with a B.A. with First Class Honours in Economics, and received a B.A. in jurisprudence from University College, Oxford and a Ph.D in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. He also received an honorary L.L.D. degree from UBC.

Besides being an outstanding scholar and businessman, Dr. Grauer was an athlete, educator, supporter of the arts, public servant, community leader and family man. When he died of leukemia at only 55, his wife and his friends founded this lectureship to reflect his wide-ranging interests and commitment to his community.

Previous Dal Grauer Memorial Lecturers include economist John Kenneth Galbraith, architect Buckminster Fuller, biologist George Wald, novelist Margaret Atwood, pianist Richard Goode, philosopher John Ralston Saul, economist Michael Adams, and neurologist Helen Mayberg.

The next Dal Grauer Memorial Lecture is scheduled for November 2008 and will be give by Dr. Peter Clarke.

Stephen Isserlis, renowned cellist and writer has been invited to speak in the spring of 2009. Please check back for more information.
